Wendy is a two-year-old girl from Guatemala. She is a very caring child, and she loves to give hugs and play with her doll.
Unfortunately, Wendy’s liver is failing. She cannot gain weight and feels constantly tired. She may need to undergo a liver transplant. Wendy’s family has been searching for a diagnosis for over two years, and they have spent much of their savings on medical tests.
The team at our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, suspects that she inherited a dysfunctional form of a gene that protects the liver. For this reason, they sent her genes to be sequenced in the United States. This information will help them understand her condition and create a customized treatment and diet plan. Hopefully, Wendy will go on to live a healthy life.
Both of Wendy’s parents work in a store, and they cannot afford Wendy’s gene sequencing. They need help to pay for this $1,396 test.
“I want my daughter to be able to study and one day become a doctor to serve the other children like her,” says Wendy’s mother, “so she can help others like she has been helped.”
