Bright is a polite young man in his early 20s. His father is a construction worker and his mother a small-scale farmer. Bright is the third born child into a family of five children. His eldest brother is a motorcycle taxi operator and his other siblings are still in school. Bright is studying building and construction, inspired by his father. His ambition is to complete his studies to become an engineer. For two years, Bright has been suffering from a hernia, a bulging of an organ pushing through the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. At first, he thought the initial symptoms would go away, but they worsened, causing swelling in a sensitive area and pain during any activity, as well as when coughing or laughing. He had told his father about it, but due to limited finances, his father could not support him in seeking medical attention. When the symptoms became severe, Bright was brought to our medical partner's care center Karoli Lwanga Hospital where hernia repair surgery was recommended. His father is unable to raise the funds needed for his surgery and is therefore appealing for support. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Bright receive treatment. On March 12th, surgeons at Karoli Lwanga Hospital will perform a herniorrhaphy to allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Now, Bright’s family needs help to fund this $230 procedure. Bright says, “I am worried this swelling is even affecting my love for school because it pains so much whenever I sit for long. I believe with support, I will be operated on, and all this will become history."
