Veung is a 64-year-old doting grandmother. She is a retired rice farmer from Kandal province, and her husband is a retired security guard. They have one son, two daughters, and six grandchildren, and they live with their youngest daughter, who is a garment worker and supports their living. Veung enjoys going to the local pagoda on holy days with her husband and helps her children by caring for the grandchildren while her children are working. Several years ago, Veung developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. Farming has been a way of life for her since she was young, and she has spent most of her life outdoors. Now, she has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so she cannot go places on her own. When Veung learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On May 5th, doctors will perform cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $253 procedure. Veung said: "After surgery, I hope I can see better, go outside with my husband, and not be afraid I will fall. I can help my daughter to take care of my grandchildren."

Benedister is a 45-year-old single mother and small-scale farmer from Kenya. She plants maize and millet for her family's consumption and for sale. Benedister has seven children between 11 and 23 years old. When she is done with her farm work, Benedister always looks for casual jobs in order to earn extra wages. She is very hardworking, as she is her family’s sole breadwinner. One day, while walking around her compound, Benedister fell and injured her right lower limb. She was unable to walk, so she was carried by some of her relatives to the hospital. Her pain was so intense that she was given some pain medication, then sent for an x-ray. The x-ray revealed that she had a bimalleolar fracture with a joint dislocation, which means that in addition to a bone being broken, the ligaments on the inside of her ankle were injured as well. She was treated, and then her ankle was immobilized with a bulky jones splint. She is not able to walk on her own and is in a lot of pain. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner can help. On February 7th, Benedister will undergo a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation. Afterward, she will be able to walk easily again. Now, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,145 to fund this procedure. Benedister says, “It’s really sad that I cannot walk without support. My children look up to me for all their needs and here I am now with a broken leg and cannot offer any help to them. Please help me get my bones fixed so that I will be able to work and live normally as before.”

Isaac is a bright 18-year-old student from Uganda and the fourth child in his family of seven. He stays with his guardian, who is currently helping with his school fees. Isaac's parents are small-scale farmers and unable to afford the cost of his surgery needs. About seven months ago, Isaac developed a small, painless swelling on his forehead that he hoped would disappear with time. However, the mass has been increasing in size, and Isaac is concerned about future complications. Fortunately, he traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On May 10th, surgeons will remove the mass. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), is requesting $145 to fund this procedure. Isaac said: “I pray for a successful surgery. I want to look normal again. I will continue with education after recovery for a bright future.”
