Ester is a six-year-old girl from Tanzania. She is the youngest of her mother’s five children. Her father has two wives, so the household is a large one.
Ester is a sweet little girl who was burned sometime in the last year when her kanga (the colorful piece of fabric favored as an outer garment in Tanzania) caught fire. Her parents did not seek out treatment immediately and simply changed the dressing on her fingers at home. The lack of proper treatment and early splinting has meant that the fingers have contracted (skin tightening) and she is unable to straighten them.
Ester needs surgery to release the contractures, allowing her to straighten her fingers. Together with splinting as part of the rehabilitation process, this treatment will allow Ester to regain full function of her hand. $550 will cover the cost of Ester’s surgery, rehabilitation, and overall care.
Ester shared, “I would like to be able to go to school and to learn to write.”
