Im is a 60-year-old rice farmer with two daughters, four sons, and many grandchildren. She lives with her husband who is a farmer too. She likes to listen to the monks pray on the radio and watch TV.
Three years ago, Im developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision, photophobia, tearing. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside.
When Im learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. On December 2nd, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery, and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
She shared her hopes: “I hope after surgery I can see clearly again. I would like to go places by myself and see my grandchildren’s faces again.”

Im underwent sight-restoring eye surgery.
Im thought she would never be able to go out in the sun again, but was very pleased when her blurry vision disappeared a few days after she returned home from Children’s Surgical Centre. She’ll rest at home for a few days, and apply eye drops frequently to aid in healing. She looks forward to visiting her local pagoda to listen to the monks pray and caring for her grandchildren with better sight.
Im’s husband said: “we are relieved that Im will be able to see well again. She could not go outside and help with farming. Now she can be independent and enjoy watching TV if she likes. Thank you to the people who helped us.”
