Hiek is a mother of five with two daughters, three sons, and five grandchildren. Hiek lives with her youngest daughter who is a garment worker. She enjoys listening to comedies and the news.
Two years ago, Hiek developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision, photophobia, and tearing. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on her own.
When Hiek learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled there hoping for treatment. On February 23rd, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
Hiek says, “I hope I can see well again after surgery so I can take care of my grandchildren and help more with my housework.”

Hiek underwent sight-restoring eye surgery.
Hiek and her daughter knew our medical partner CSC from villagers, so they were confident Hiek would get good care. After surgery, she stayed in the hospital until surgeons were sure she was healing well. Now she’s returned home to care for her grandchildren while her daughter works. She is even considering returning to selling fruit at the local market, which will financially support her family.
Hiek said: “I am relieved my eye is better. I can go outside without help and am not worried I will fall. I want to visit my neighbors and cook for my grandchildren and now I can do that. Thank you to those who helped me have some good years left with my family.”
