Roem is a 65-year-old farmer from Cambodia. She has two daughters and one son. Roem lives with her daughter because her husband passed away two years ago. She shared that she enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio.
Four years ago, Roem developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her blurry vision, itchiness, and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside.
When Roem learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours with her brother seeking treatment. On November 17th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and place an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
Roem shared, “After my surgery, I hope I can see well and get around outside on my own easily.”

Roem underwent a cataract surgery.
Roem traveled to Watsi’s medical partner CSC for surgery to remove her cataract and insert an intraocular lens. Before surgery, she was unable to recognize faces, go outside, or help with family chores.
After a post-operative course of eye drops to decrease inflammation and aid in healing, she is able to see better, go outside, and recognize familiar faces. She looks forward to visiting the pagoda by herself!
“I’m reallyhappy that I can see better, do more outside, and see faces. I can take care of myself and take my grandchildren to join ceremonies at the pagoda.”
