Mary is 27 and pregnant. She has not been feeling well recently and cannot farm her garden because of the pain. Her family does not have enough income to pay for Mary’s healthcare. Having already lost her husband and one of her two children, Mary could use a little help. Lwala Community Alliance can help Mary.
Sub-Saharan Africa experiences high rates of maternal and child mortality. In Kenya, 34% of deaths in children under-5 are attributed to neonatal causes. Proper healthcare during pregnancy can help curb these rates. For $215, Mary will receive: 4 prenatal visits at the clinic, 6 home visits from a community health care worker, delivery at a hospital facility and a postnatal checkup.
Mary told a Watsi coordinator a Lwala: “I pray to deliver a healthy baby at a hospital, not a sick baby and then when my baby grows up, she can get an education.” Proper maternal healthcare is key in helping Mary achieve these goals.
