Meet Rokia, an active and ambitious 12-year-old girl from Mali! Rokia lives in a small village with her parents where she attends the local school. She is an avid learner and loves playing with her friends, though she recently fell in the school yard and badly fractured her leg. Rokia was rushed to the hospital where doctors discovered a bone lesion at the fracture site, indicating that a bone tumor may have caused the fracture.
Rokia is eager to be able to walk and go to school once again. Not only will she be free from pain, but she will be able to do what she loves most; learn in a classroom. “Rokia dreams of becoming a teacher in her village to help improve literacy rates in her community,” our partners at Project Muso tell us. “In her village most children are working in the fields and unable to attend school. She wishes to become a teacher so that more children will have the opportunity to have an education.”
For $1,500, Rokia will undergo pathologic fracture surgery. This operation will treat the break while also allowing her doctors “to diagnose and treat the underlying cause–so that she might have a chance of walking again, and to prevent potentially fatal complications.” Together we can support Rokia’s road to recovery!
