Evelyne is a 15-year-old girl from Uganda who is expecting her first child. She lives with her mother and five siblings, and enjoys singing in her church choir. Because of Evelyne's age, doctors consider her pregnancy to be high-risk. They recommend that she receive medical attention before, during, and after labor to ensure a safe delivery. Starting June 20, she will begin to receive supplements and attend prenatal check-ups and health education classes. She will deliver her baby in the hospital, and will be monitored after her delivery to ensure that she and her baby are safe. Although Evelyne's family is able to contribute $7 to the cost of her care, our medical partner, The Kellermann Foundation, is requesting $241 to fund the rest of Evelyne's pregnancy care. “Thank you for helping my daughter. There are many of us at home to feed and we did not have the money for a hospital delivery. Now I know my daughter will be taken care of.” Evelyne's mother says.

Zifa is a farmer from Malawi. He recently traveled to our medical partner’s care center, Kabudula Community Hospital. Kabudula is a rural community outside of the capital city of Lilongwe. The health catchment area serves roughly 350,000 people, but the health centers and the hospital are often poorly stocked and staffed.  One of Zifa’s teeth has been causing him bothersome symptoms. Diet is an issue for dental health in Malawi, where sugarcane is prevalent. Also, there is little to no oral health education in Malawi and limited access to a dental professional. In fact, there are fewer than 20 dentists across the country. Fortunately, a visiting dentist will perform a dental extraction. A dental extraction is a simple procedure with few risks, and it will result in a significant reduction in his symptoms. Zifa is scheduled to undergo treatment on July 21. Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting just $28 to fund the procedure.

25-year-old Darias lives in Uganda with his wife, Josephine, and their one-year-old daughter. Darias has been diagnosed with an inguinal hernia, a condition in which soft tissue protrudes through the abdominal muscles. The pain has kept him from working full-time, and he has not been able to participate fully in daily activities. When Darias is feeling well, he joins his wife in cultivating their small piece of land. They grow maize, beans, bananas, and nuts for consumption, sometimes selling the surplus for income. Unfortunately, Darias has not been able to afford surgery. With the help of our medical partner, The Kellermann Foundation, Darius has been scheduled for corrective surgery on February 8. Watsi is asking for $229 to cover the costs of the procedure. Your donation will help pay for the surgery, surgical supplies, medication, and five nights stay in the hospital. When he recovers, Darius plans to start farming again. He also plans to make bricks to complete his house. "Thank you for covering my treatment," Darius says. "I will be able to resume some of my jobs normally without pain."

19-month-old Eber is a shy boy who lives with his family in Guatemala’s rural highlands. Eber likes playing with his plastic ball and his toy car, and he often pretends that the car is taking him on long trips. Despite his love of lighthearted games, Eber is battling a serious medical condition: malnutrition. In the short term, malnutrition means that Eber’s immune system is weak and that he is underweight and small for his age—conditions that could result in permanent stunting if he does not regain his health soon. Other long-term consequences of his nutritional deficiency could include a lower IQ and a higher likelihood of dropping out of school. Although Eber’s parents want badly to help their son recover from malnutrition, they do not have the resources to pay for the medical intervention he needs. Eber’s father works every day in the countryside planting corn, while the boy’s mother takes care of the household and weaves traditional Mayan textiles. Fortunately, we can give this family a hand. For $492, Eber will receive both short- and long-term help beginning on April 17. Food supplementation and micronutrients will make sure the boy returns quickly to a standard weight. One-on-one nutrition lessons between Eber's mother and a community health worker will make sure Eber remains healthy. “I am glad to be a part of this program so that my son has the opportunity to get better,” Eber’s mother shares. “I hope that over time he will develop into a healthy boy.”

Htoo is a ten-year-old boy from Burma. He lives in a village with his parents and his three siblings. Htoo attends school and is in the third grade. In November of 2016, Htoo received treatment for abnormal swelling in his lymph nodes. At this time, he underwent a [CT scan](https://watsi.org/profile/32ad5bbaafb4-htoo) funded by Watsi. The scan was used to investigate swelling in his lymph nodes, an organ that is part of the lymphatic system and is essential to a properly-functioning immune system. Physicians diagnosed him with lymphadenopathy, a disease of the lymph nodes. They have scheduled surgery to remove the mass identified in the CT scan on January 30. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $1,500 to fund Htoo's surgery. After his surgery, the mass will be sent to a laboratory for biopsy testing to determine if it is benign or cancerous. Htoo's mother says, "I am excited. I'm happy my son is getting surgery now because I would have never been able to afford it myself, and I wouldn't know where else to look for the right treatment. I hope he will be more healthy after surgery. I love him so much. I have decided to support him in whatever he wants to be in the future."

Meet Phan, a 68-year-old man from Cambodia. Phan is married with two sons, three daughters, and three grandchildren. He enjoys listening to the radio and visiting the pagoda. Three years ago, Phan developed mature cataracts in each eye. A cataract occurs when a thin, cloudy layer forms over the eye’s lens. This causes him blurred vision, discharge, tearing, and fear of bright lights. It is hard for him to see clearly, do work, or go anywhere outside. After learning about Children's Surgical Centre, Watsi's medical partner, Phan and his daughter travelled three hours to visit their clinic. They learned that a simple surgical procedure may restore Phan's sight. With $225, Phan will undergo cataract surgery, during which his old lenses will be removed and replaced with sheer artificial implants, allowing him to see again immediately after his operation.

Bean is a 50-year-old rice farmer. She is married with two sons and one daughter and lives with her family in Cambodia. Bean enjoys listening to social news on the radio and working around her home. 10 years ago, Bean developed a pterygium in each eye. A pterygium is a cyst that starts on the clear tissue of the eye and can spread to the cornea. This caused her blurred vision, burning, tearing, irritation, and she is afraid of the bright sunshine. She can't do work well or get around easily on her own. After traveling for four hours with her daughter, Bean was able to visit our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC) for medical help. Doctors from CSC will perform a pterygium excision surgery, which costs $150. Bean's burning and irritation will be relieved and the cysts will be removed from each eye. "I hope I can continue my work on the farm with a comfortable feeling," shares Bean.
