Mai is a 48-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. He has one son and one daughter, and enjoys watching television and listening to music on the radio.
One year ago, Mai had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the ear drum, in his right ear to perforate. For this reason, Mai experiences pain, discharge, and hearing loss. He cannot listen to others easily and it is difficult for him to communicate effectively.
Mai traveled to our medical partner’s care center to receive treatment. On February 4th, he will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in his right ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is requesting $464 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care.
“I hope that my hearing will improve and that my ear drum will be able to heal,” Mai shared.

Mai underwent myringoplasty ear surgery.
Mai’s operation has improved his quality of life by eliminating the ear infection, as well as any ear discharge and discomfort. Surgery was important in preventing further damage, which could result in permanent hearing loss. Mai will have to keep his ear clear of any water until it heals, and will use ear drops for the next two weeks to prevent infection. The surgeons are looking forward to witnessing his progress further during his follow-up visit next month.
He said, “I am no longer feeling nauseous and do not have any vertigo. I am so glad that my operation has improved my hearing, and my wife was so happy to hear the results of my surgery.”
