Segundina is a 58-year-old grandmother from the Philippines. She is a hardworking woman who wants the best for her family. Separated from her husband, Segundina supports the needs of her 8 children.
She worked all kinds of jobs, including cleaning houses, doing laundry, farming, and baby-sitting, earning about $30-$40 per month. Now, some of her children have their own family and she lives with her three granddaughters.
Segundina has an inflamed thyroid, and has been living with this discomfort for almost 25 years. Whenever she carries heavy objects, she feels pain in her neck. At times, she has difficulty breathing and gets tired and sick easily. She can barely work and is very worried all the time.
Our medical partner, International Care Ministries (ICM), identified Segundina’s need for surgery. She underwent series of tests and eventually qualified for surgery. $365 will cover the cost of Segundina’s thyroid removal surgery.
After the surgery, Segundina will be free of pain, discomfort and breathing difficulties. She will be able to enjoy living with her 3 granddaughters and can work again to help provide for their needs.
“I am so thankful that I am qualified for surgery,” Segundina shares. “I want to live a life free of pain and discomfort. When the surgery is done and I get better, I will look for a stable job that could make me provide for the needs of my grandchildren. I will also spend more quality time with my children.”
