Koem Seng is a friendly and helpful 14-year-old boy from Cambodia. He lives with his parents and his three younger sisters. To help support their family, his father works as a garbage collector. Koem Seng is currently enrolled in seventh grade. He enjoys playing football with his friends and helping his mother around the house.
Six months ago, Koem Seng had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the ear drum, in his right ear to perforate. He now experiences headaches, pain, ringing in his ear, ear discharge, and hearing loss. Because of his condition and its effects, he also has difficulty communicating clearly with others.
Fortunately, Koem Seng traveled to our medical partner’s care center to receive treatment. On July 19th, he will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in his right ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, is requesting $487 to fund this procedure. This covers supplies, treatment, and inpatient care.
Koem Seng says, “I hope my hearing can improve and the discharge will stop.”

Koem Seng underwent ear surgery to hesl his symptoms and allow him to live more comfortably.
Koem Seng and his family traveled to Children’s Surgical Centre for his surgery. He had a successful surgery - his symptoms could have become more serious with permanent hearing loss. After a night in the hospital, he was able to return home. He will use antibiotic drops and return to the hospital in a week for his stitches to be removed. When he is fully healed, his hearing will improve and he will be able to communicate better. This will help him tremendously in communication with family and friends, as well as help him be successful in school.
Koem Seng’s mother said: “I was so worried that my son would still have infections and not be able to hear. This would cause him stress in school. Now we are very grateful to the doctors and the staff for the success of his operation. Thank you to the strangers who helped us pay for his surgery.”
