Brandon is a one-week-old baby and has one older sibling. Brandon’s parents are small scale farmers of maize and vegetables, and his father also has a motorbike that he uses to carry passengers to make a living to be able to support his family.
Brandon was born with spina bifida, a type of neural tube defect in which the spine does not properly close around the spinal cord. Without treatment, Brandon is at risk of lower-limb paralysis, infection of the exposed nervous tissue, development of tethered cord syndrome, and possible developmental delays.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $1,015 to cover the cost of Brandon’s spina bifida closure surgery. The procedure is scheduled to take place on May 10th. This procedure will hopefully spare Brandon from the risks associated with his condition, instead allowing him to grow and develop along a healthy trajectory.
Brandon’s mother says, “Please help treat our baby, we don’t have anywhere to ask for help and we cannot afford the cost.”

Brandon underwent life-saving spinal surgery.
Brandon had a successful surgery that has helped correct his spine defect that was putting him in danger of losing lower limb power and putting his life at risk in case this area was infected. Through this surgery, Brandon is no longer at risk and will be able to lead a full life. He has started showing early signs of hydrocephalus, which is common for babies born with spinal bifida, so the medical team is planning that he may need surgery to treat this condition and make sure he has a healthy road ahead.
Brandon’s mother says, “God bless you. I do not know what would have been my baby’s fate if it wasn’t for your help and support. Thank you very much.’’
