Lwala Community Alliance is a non-profit organization founded by Dr. Milton and Fred Ochieng, two brothers from Lwala, Kenya, who lost their parents to HIV while in college in the United States and were inspired to bring medical care back to their community.

Now, the Lwala Community Health Center serves over 33,000 patients each year. It is transforming maternal health care in the area, increasing the number of women who deliver with a skilled birth attendant to 96% and, through community outreach, pre-natal care, and education, solving many of the problems that cause maternal and child health issues.

“Josinter is known in her village as a social lady who happily interacts with everybody in the community,” shares our medical partner in Kenya, Lwala Community Alliance (LCA). “Josinter is married to a farmer and they have three children who are all in primary school.” Josinter is currently pregnant with the family’s fourth child, and is experiencing headaches and mild abdominal pain. As a result, she’s unable to help on her family’s farm or attend to her household duties. “Josinter hopes for a healthy and jovial child and for a quick recovery after delivery so that she can join her husband on the farm,” shares LCA. $290 will provide Josinter and her baby with prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care.

“My only wish is to deliver safely at a health facility, recover quickly and to be able to care for my baby because I know she/he will need me,” shares Lydia. Lydia is an energetic 19-year-old woman who lives in Kenya with her husband. To provide for the needs of their family, Lydia makes and sells her own beaded jewelry at the local market and her husband owns a small piece of land on which he grows onions, tomatoes, potatoes, and other vegetables for family use. Lydia is pregnant with her first child and is having a difficult pregnancy. She feels tired, weak and unable to walk for long distances. Recently, she has experienced swelling in her legs after sitting for too long. She has been advised by clinicians to walk each day to increase her strength, but exhaustion makes this difficult. Lydia fears a home delivery because of the potential infection and danger, but her family does not earn enough money to cover the cost of a safe delivery. We can fund a safe delivery for $290. In addition to the delivery, Lydia will also be offered pre and postnatal care. “Lydia will deliver in a hospital facility with trained medical professions supervising in case of complications,” explains our medical partner, Lwala Community Alliance. Say hello to Pamela, a 39-year-old mother of five in Kenya, who is expecting her sixth child. Pamela married a farmer who owns land that he uses to provide for the family. She has learned valuable skills from the community health workers at Lwala Community Alliance, our medical partners in Kenya, including how to treat water so that it is safe to drink and how to prepare nutritious meals with locally grown produce. Although her hard work earns her enough money to feed her family and send her children to school, it is not enough to ensure that she will have a safe delivery. Lwala Community Alliance explains that "she is experiencing pains unlike pervious pregnancies [and] due to discomfort, is not able to perform all the chores in the house that are required to raise her other children." For $290, Pamela will receive prenatal and postnatal care, as well as a safe delivery in a healthcare facility. Let's help Pamela experience less pain throughout the rest of her pregnancy and ensure a sound delivery supervised by nurses!

“I hope to safely deliver my baby, recover quickly, continue with my house chores and income activities,” says Everlyne an 18-year-old mother from Kenya. Everlyne is married to a farmer, has two daughters, and is currently expecting a third. She likes watching live football and eating boiled fish. Everlyne is currently experiencing morning sickness and lower abdominal and back pain at night. This makes it difficult for her to get enough sleep for her daytime responsibilities. Our medical partner Lwala Community Alliance shares, “Deep inside her she knows that hospital delivery is much safer and chances of her baby getting infections are minimal compared to home delivery.” For $290, Everlyne will receive prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care which will reduce the chance of her baby acquiring infections as well as allow Everlyne to sleep and finish her daytime activities without discomfort. “I hope for a safe delivery and to deliver a healthy baby in a germ-free zone,” shares Salome. Salome is a 26-year-old hardworking mother of five from Kenya. Salome goes to church with her family and enjoys playing, watching television, and listening to educational radio programs. Salome is pregnant with her sixth child but is having a difficult pregnancy. For the past two weeks, she has been experiencing lower abdominal pains and back pains and nausea after every meal, especially in the morning hours. She is unable to complete her daily chores, including farming, which is a source of livelihood for her family. Salome’s husband is a small-scale farmer but his income is not enough to take care of the family and pay for medical bills. We can fund a safe delivery for $290. In addition to the delivery, Salome will receive pre and postnatal care. “The patient will be free from pregnancy complications and will resume her normal life duties,” explains our medical partner, Lwala Community Alliance. “She is looking forward to starting family planning as soon as she delivers her baby, and later, starting a small business to sustain her family.” Let’s give Salome the support she needs to welcome a new baby and return to her daily activities!

Say hello to Lilian, a 21-year-old mother from Kenya, who is expecting her second child. She is married to a primary school teacher, a career she hopes to pursue herself. Lilian completed secondary school and qualified to attend college, but did not continue her education because her family could not afford the fees. Lilian married her husband, who also shared the dream of being a teacher, and decided to take her back to college so she could become a teacher. Lilian is currently in her second year and expects to go back and graduate after she delivers her baby. Lilian is having a difficult pregnancy, experiencing lower abdominal and back pain, which interrupts her ability to care of her family. She needs access to medical care to ensure a safe delivery, but she cannot afford the cost. We can fund a safe delivery for $290. In addition to the delivery, Lilian will also be offered pre and postnatal care. Let’s support Lilian and her family as they welcome a new baby!

“I hope to be provided with a safe and successful delivery, invest in a better business which will enable me to cater for my baby, siblings, mother-in-law and my elderly parents’ basic needs,” says Elizabeth. Meet Elizabeth, a 20-year-old pregnant woman from Kenya. “Elizabeth experiences headaches, fatigue, and lower abdominal pain frequently which does not allow her to perform her daily activities like gardening, house chores, baking, and making chapatis to sell to pupils,” says our medical partner, Lwala Community Alliance (LCA). Elizabeth lives with her mother-in-law and husband. “She bakes and sells chapatis to pupils during break time and lunch hours. Her husband is a primary school teacher and works on his farm during weekends. She shared with us that the income they derive from the business and teaching is not enough to take care of the medical bills during delivery,” continues LCA. For $290, we can fund prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care to ensure that both Elizabeth and her baby will be healthy. “With no complications arising during delivery, Elizabeth will be able to perform her daily activities and sell her chapatis with no discomfort,”concludes LCA.

“I long to have a successful pregnancy with few or no complications at all, and that my baby is born safely in a hospital,” shares Brenda. Meet Brenda, a newly married 19-year-old woman. Brenda is from Kenya, where she lives with her husband. To support his family, including Brenda, his siblings and his mother, Brenda’s husband owns a small piece of land. He grows seasonal crops, but the produce only sustains the family for about two months a year. For this reason, her husband commutes to a nearby town to work as a day laborer. Brenda works as a hairdresser but she has recently been unable to attend to her customers. Brenda and her husband are expecting their first baby, but Brenda is having a difficult pregnancy. She is experiencing lower abdominal pains, making is difficult for her to do house chores and continue working. We can fund pre and postnatal care and a safe delivery for $290. “The patient will be able to return to her normal duties after safe delivery without any complications,” explain our medical partners at Lwala Community Alliance. Riziki is a 16-year-old secondary school student from Kenya who enjoys studying business. Riziki is pregnant with her first child and is having a difficult pregnancy. She is experiencing pain in her left thigh and has not been able to sleep for the last few days, due to pain. She is now unable to go school, perform her daily house chores, or help her mother cultivate their farm. We can fund a safe delivery for $290. In addition to the delivery, Riziki will also be offered pre and postnatal care. “Safe delivery will enable Riziki to feel better, continue with her schooling, and have fun with her friends again,” explains our medical partner, Lwala Community Alliance. “If only I could have my baby safely delivered in a health facility and also safe from any complications, I would really appreciate it,” says Monica. Meet Monica, a jovial 17-year-old woman from Kenya who's pregnant with her first child. Our medical partner, Lwala Community Alliance (LCA), report that Monica “complains of headaches and lower abdominal pains. Thus she cannot currently attend to her daily chores including farming which is a source of livelihood for her.” Monica needs special care to ensure a safe delivery, but her family cannot afford it. “Monica is single and her family are peasant farmers,” LCA continues. "The income they derive from farming is not enough to take care of medical bills during this period of pregnancy.” For $290, we can fund prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care while also mitigating her pain during pregnancy. After she gives birth, Monica hopes to enroll in college. With prenatal care and a safe delivery, LCA tells us Monica "will be free from headaches and lower abdominal pains. She will resume her normal duties and have a safe delivery.”

Meet Saline, a 25-year-old wife, and mother of three boys living in Kenya. She married a farmer at age 18 and, although unable to attend school growing up, is putting her children through primary school. Saline is pregnant; however, according to our medical partners at Lwala Community Alliance, Saline is experiencing a loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting after every meal, and lower abdominal pain. As a result, Saline feels very weak and has little energy to get up and move around. For $290, Saline will receive both prenatal and postnatal care, as well as a safe delivery. This will help ensure that Saline's symptoms are addressed so that she can continue to help out around the house throughout her pregnancy. The funds will also provide a safe delivery so that she will be able to join her husband on the farm after the baby is born. Saline says, "I hope that my baby is born in a safe environment, healthy and immunized at birth to enable him/her to grow strong."

“I hope to feel better soon and to join my new school,” says Christine. Say hello to Christine, an honest and hardworking 16-year-old girl living in Kenya with her parents and her eight siblings. Christine is in school and hopes to become a teacher after completing her education. Christine is pregnant and having a difficult pregnancy. Although she is ready to join secondary school, Christine finds it challenging to walk to school. Her legs are tired and she feels a burning sensation on her back, preventing her from enjoying her usual lifestyle. She needs special care to ensure a safe delivery, but her family cannot afford to pay for it. To support their large family, Christine’s mother is a farmer and her father teaches at a local primary school. “Her mother tell us that her fathers income is not even enough to supplement the family's need and paying Christine's safe delivery cost is completely out of their reach,” shares our medical partner, Lwala Community Alliance (LCA). We can fund a safe delivery for $290. In addition to the delivery, Christine will be offered pre and postnatal care.
