Edna Adan Hospital is a non-profit hospital in Hargeisa, Somaliland. Founded by Edna Adan Ismail, the former Foreign Minister of Somaliland and former First Lady of Somalia, Edna Adan Hospital is a beacon of health and hope for people living in one of the most difficult environments in the world.

Known around the world as “the Muslim Mother Teresa,” Edna Adan Ismail used her UN pension to build a hospital that would serve communities devastated by the decades-long Somali civil war and train the next generation of nurses, midwives, and doctors.

Edna’s Hospital has been fully functional and serving growing numbers of patients since 2002. It has been featured in The New York Times, and on PBS in the documentary, “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide”. Learn more on their website.

Meet Hinda, a two-month-old and the fifth child in her family of nomads from central Somaliland. Her mother tends to the household while her father looks after the livestock. Hinda has hydrocephalus, a condition causing accumulation of fluid in the brain. Although it is difficult to tell at such a young age, Hinda appears to be blind and is often irritable and has difficulty feeding. This will continue if left untreated and Hinda’s eyesight may become more damaged. Our medical partner Edna Adan Hospital (EAH) shares that Hinda’s mother is "looking forward to the procedure because she feels that once Hinda has her operation she will start to develop and work towards her milestones like her brothers and sisters." For $640 EAH will be able to perform a surgery to drain the excess fluid, decreasing pressure on Hinda's brain. This will reduce any further damage to her eyes, and Hinda's feeding and irritability will improve. Let’s work together to help Hinda grow up strong and healthy!

Mohamed is a three-month-old baby boy from Somaliland! He is the ninth child in his family, and he carries the condition of hydrocephalus, in which fluid accumulates in his skull. "Mohamed is thought to be blind, although it is difficult to assess at his age," our partner Edna Adan Hospital (EAH) tells us. "He is often irritable and has difficulties feeding." “[His parents] have been taking him to traditional healers as they were not aware of any medical treatment that was available until promotion [of EAH] began in the community,” explains EAH. The burn scars on Mohamed's head is a common traditional healer method for treatment. "His mother is excited to learn that there is other treatment available and is hopeful that Mohamed will now be able to reach his milestones," our medical partner tells us. For $640, we can reduce the swelling in his head and help to improve his appetite and decrease his irritability!

"Said is hopeful that his headaches will go away once the doctors have fixed him so he can go back to school and learn and play with his friends,” share our partners at Edna Adan Hospital. Said is a nine-year-old student from Somaliland. Nine months ago, Said began experiencing headaches that kept him from attending school. His symptoms have gotten progressively worse, and he now requires a wheelchair to get around. A doctor in his local hospital diagnosed Said with hydrocephalus, a condition in which there is excess fluid in the skull and can result in brain damage. There was no treatment available for Said in his local hospital, so a community health worker brought Said to Edna Adan Hospital. For $640, we can fund surgery for a shunt incision to drain excess fluid from Said’s brain. After surgery, Said will no longer be at significant risk of brain damage and his headaches will decrease in frequency and severity. Let’s help Said return to school with his friends and improved health!

“Amina is a six-month-old who has had an abnormally large head since birth,” explains our medical partner, Edna Adan Hospital. “Her mother states she does not feed well and is often lethargic.” Amina has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition that can result in brain damage as excess fluid accumulates inside the skull. The first child for her parents, Amina lives in an area of Somalia where the local hospital cannot treat her condition. Amina’s parents are unemployed, and are concerned that Amina’s condition will worsen since they cannot afford treatment. For $640, we can fund a surgical procedure that will insert a shunt to drain the excess fluid in Amina’s skull. Doctors anticipate that the surgery will reduce the size of Amina’s head, decrease her risk of brain damage, and increase her appetite and activity. Let’s help baby Amina grow into a healthy young girl!

"Abdinajib enjoys playing quiet games but does not run around like the other children his age," says our medical partner, Edna Adan Hospital (EAH). "He finds this too difficult and is scared he will fall and hurt himself." Nine-year-old Abdinajib is a boy from Ethiopia who was born with club feet. He has difficulty walking, and has to walk on the sides of his feet -- which is painful, and leaves him at higher risk for injury. Abdinajib and his family travelled to our medical partner when they could not find treatment nearby their home. EAH is able to treat Abdinajib's club feet for $1184, and provide further support after surgery. "He has been linked to a disability outreach center that will assist him and his family with future mobilization equipment and rehabilitation," says EAH. Let's help Abdinajib move around and play like other children his age!

"Abdirizak is his mother's first baby," our partner, Edna Adan Hospital (EAH), tells us. "She is a home maker and his father does odd jobs." Abdirizak has hydrocephalus, a condition in which fluid accumulates in the skull, and spina bifida, in which the spinal cord is not fully formed and developed. Because of the spina bifida, Abdirizak has paralysis in his legs. “Unfortunately the paralysis is not reversible and Abdirizak will be paralyzed his entire life,” EAH explains, “But removing the lesion will decrease his risk of dying from sepsis through an infection in the lesion." "His mother is looking forward to the lesion being removed from Abdirizak's back," his doctors add. Abdirizak’s mother has received educational information about his condition and has been given access to a disability outreach program that will help her provide care for her son. “She has also been commenced on folic acid to decrease the likelihood of having children being born with spina bifida in the future.” For $1,118, we can fund Abdirizak's treatment to remove his lesion and reduce his chances of infection.

Meet Aydarus, a 26-year old man living in Somaliland. He sustained severe burns in an accident, and has had to travel 16 hours round-trip to receive constant treatment in the last year, including skin grafts. Aydarus needs further medical care, but is unable to afford it since he hasn't been able to work since his accident. For $1,500 he will receive the care his wounds need as well as have his bilateral axillary contractures released, which will allow him to "be able to move his arms more freely...and therefore obtain more autonomy in his daily living" shares our partner, Edna Adan Hospital (EAH). “Aydarus is looking forward to the end of his treatment so he can start 'fresh,'" adds EAH. “Yusuf has had an abnormally large head since birth. He is often irritable and appears uncomfortable. He is slower meeting his milestones compared to other children his age,” shares Edna Adan Hospital (EAH), our medical partner in Somalia. Yusuf is a one-year-old boy with hydrocephalus, a condition causing build up of fluid in the brain that can impair function. EAH shares more about Yusuf, “He is the youngest of six children. His other siblings are healthy. He had previously been to a traditional healer prior to this where he sustained burns to his head as treatment.” For $640, we can fund a procedure to drain the excess fluid in Yusuf’s brain. This treatment is expected to reduce the circumference of Yusuf’s head, leaving him less irritable and more likely to reach age-appropriate milestones such as sitting unassisted. EAH says Yusuf’s mother "is hopeful that the treatment will make Yusuf more comfortable and less irritable so he can feed better and develop like his siblings.” Together, we can help Yusuf get back on track.

Abdifatah is a 5-month-old boy from Somalia and the second child of his parents. He was born with hydrocephalus, a condition where water accumulates on the brain. This causes intracranial pressure and if left untreated, can stop neurological development, resulting in failure to reach important milestones. Our medical partners at Edna Adan Hospital (EAH) tell us that his family has traveled from their home village in "because war has disrupted all healthcare services in Somalia. His family is very poor but a community health worker raised money to bring several children" to the hospital for treatment. EAH continues,“It is important to correct hydrocephalus as early as possible. Early treatment will help avoid or decrease the chance of disabilities such as blindness or even death in serious cases.” For $640 we can fund Abdifatah’s treatment, surgery and recovery at EAH. His family shares with us that they “are hopeful the treatment will help Abdifatah develop normally.” Let’s come together and help him receive the healthcare he needs to lead a happy life!

Meet Farhan, a 29-year-old man from Somaliland. Farhan was born with a club foot, which limits his ability to walk and do labor. When Farhan was younger, he also contracted Polio and has difficulty moving his right arm as a result. Due to his mobility challenges, Farhan has been unable to work and earn a good income. For $790, we can fund surgery to repair Farhan’s foot. Our partner, Edna Adan Hospital, explains that “he has also been linked to a disability outreach program that will assist him with mobilization equipment and rehabilitation” for after his surgery. Let’s help Farhan enjoy improved mobility so that he can realize his hopes of being more employable and earning an income to support himself independently!

Meet Hussein, a four-year-old boy from Somalia. Edna Adan Hospital (EAD), our medical partner in Somaliland, shares that, “Hussein sustained severe burns to both of his arms when he fell onto burning charcoal, which is used in traditional household kitchens on the floor for cooking. He now has decreased use of both arms due to burn contractures.” For $1165, we can fund a procedure to release the contractures on Hussein’s right side--a procedure that has already been completed on his left side. “Hussein’s mother is hopeful that he will have restored mobility in his wrist and hands and be able to continue his life as normally as possible.” Let’s help Hussein get back on track!

Meet Mustafe, a four-year-old boy from Somaliland. Mustafe was born with club feet, which makes it difficult for him to walk. Because of his feet, Mustafe falls over and hurts himself often. He struggles to keep up with his peers, and is unable to play games with other children. For $1,184, we can fund bilateral club foot repair surgery and follow-up care for Mustafe. After the surgery, our medical partners at Edna Adan Hospital anticipate Mustafe’s mobility will greatly improve.
